Mr. Goonan is the Founder and Managing Shareholder of The Affinity Law Group APC. Mr. Goonan was named one of the Top Lawyers in San Diego for Business Litigation in the March 2013 edition of San Diego Magazine.

Mr. Goonan has over twenty-seven years’ experience handling a wide variety of litigation and business matters for clients ranging from large, multi-national corporations to small businesses and individuals. Mr. Goonan has handled well over one hundred jury trials, court trials, arbitrations, mediations and administrative proceedings before state and federal courts and agencies throughout California and the United States.Because of this vast experience, Mr. Goonan is an expert in handling complex business litigation matters that involve a large volume of documents and multiple witnesses, often located throughout the United States and in foreign countries.

The subject areas of Mr. Goonan’s litigation experience are broad and sophisticated, and include breach of contract and business tort matters (fraud, unfair business practices, etc.), banking litigation, partnership and shareholder disputes, business purchase and sale disputes, real estate disputes, civil RICO cases, employment cases, and consumer matters. Mr. Goonan also has substantial appellate experience before both state and federal appellate courts throughout the United States.

Mr. Goonan likewise has broad-based experience handling business transactional matters and the preparation of business agreements and contracts in a wide variety of subject areas, including business purchase and sale agreements, licensing agreements, real estate matters, employment and independent contractor agreements, and media and advertising agreements. Mr. Goonan also has handled the formation and incorporation of dozens of businesses in a wide variety of industry segments.

Mr. Goonan is experienced in all aspects of intellectual property law, including the research and preparation of applications, amendments and appeals involving trademarks and copyrights, as well as the protection of trade secrets and issues involving advertising law. Mr. Goonan regularly counsels clients in the protection of intellectual property rights, domain name issues, and the avoidance of infringement claims. He also regularly advises clients with respect to business transactions involving intellectual property (e.g., OEM agreements, distributor agreements, licenses, assignments, leases, purchase agreements, etc.).

Mr. Goonan has an active practice litigating intellectual property cases in state and federal courts in California and throughout the United States as well as before specialized tribunals such as the International Trade Commission, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and arbitration groups authorized by WIPO to resolve domain name disputes.

Mr. Goonan also is knowledgeable about immigration law matters, and has the expertise to assist clients with visa issues and immigration-related litigation.

Mr. Goonan received his J.D. degree with honors in 1985 from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, where he was a member and then the Chief Note & Comment Editor of the Loyola Law Review. Mr. Goonan received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston University with a major in Geography and a minor in Political Science.

Upon graduation from law school, Mr. Goonan had the honor to serve as a judicial law clerk for the Hon. A. Andrew Hauk, Senior Judge and Chief Judge Emeritus for the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. Mr. Goonan then trained at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where he had the privilege to work with some of the most renowned and legendary trial lawyers in California including Frank Rothman and William A. Masterson. After relocating to San Diego, Mr. Goonan was a partner in several well-known San Diego business law firms before founding The Affinity Law Group APC in June 2003.
For more than 15 years, Mr. Goonan has received the highest AV Preeminent Peer Review Rating from the Martindale-Hubbell legal rating service for ethics and legal skills.

On A Personal Note: Mr. Goonan grew up in Long Branch, New Jersey and moved to California in 1979 following his graduation from Boston University. Mr. Goonan is an avid sports fan and often will be found rooting for his beloved Red Sox, Celtics, Chargers and mighty Boston University Terriers on weekends. Mr. Goonan also enjoys body surfing, skiing and golf, and has coached Little League baseball for the past 9 years. Mr. Goonan is active in church activities at Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Mr. Goonan often serves as a judge for college and law school trial advocacy and appellate advocacy competitions, and is a frequent lecturer on legal topics at college and law school law classes, and before industry groups and service organizations.
